Enjoying the Good Stuff and Telling the Bad To Talk To The Hand

“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

Martin Luther King, Junior

I agree. What an exhausting thing, hate. Or even irritation. Or even not liking something really, really bad. I don’t have time for it. It’s all I can do to get my mascara on straight while drivi–er, fixing breakfast for my troops. Not to mention getting them all out the door with actual digestible food-products in their lunches, a general consensus on whether or not this is an A-day or a B-day, then texting my retirement-eater-child at her dorm to give her a huzzah for kicking her English paper. Plus sending my hub off with a kiss and a smile instead of a grunt and his dry-cleaning tags.

I’ve got no energy for the whole being angry-and-waving-an-indignant-flag-around-thing. I want to save it all for the good stuff. Like listening to my older boy-child picking out Steve Howe’s Mood For A Day on the guitar, and realizing that the kid has talent. Or leaping and posing on the front lawn with the fam, taking pictures of our general idiocy, then posting them on Facebook and not caring about how stupid we look. Or learning a little more about a person and what they think before I run in and protest their teaching method, or city council voting, or cutting-off-of-me on the freeway. And then there’s hanging out in Seattle with my brother and is partner and taking part in their unbeLIEVABLE musical talent. Not to mention generosity. Not to mention penchant for finding awesome restaurants and movies.

I think I’d rather spend my time finding out than hating. Seems to me that it’s the finding out that makes all that negativity melt like so much cheese on a chip in a microwave. Because when we take the time, we usually find out that people are people–just like us. It’s the not knowing or understanding that creates the fear or distrust and leads to the hating. It ain’t worth it. Melt the cheese, people! Melt the cheese! Makes for better nachos anyway.

I think Dr. King had something here. And I’m going to try to live it better. I’m even going to branch out a bit. I’m told Tomme d’Abondance melts really well.

Here’s the cheese. Melt away, little cheese slice!

My greatest pleasure in life has been raising my four excellent children--some of whom liked me so much that they keep coming back. My second greatest pleasure has been doing whatever I can to make people laugh and create bright moments. I hope to do a bit more good in the world before I go the way of it. And if not, I'd better at least get to spend some serious time writing and singing in a castle somewhere in the UK.
